On-board contactless payment has been made available to use on all Florence urban and suburban buses and trams starting in March 2024. Every bus and tram in the Florence metro area now accepts contactless card payment from Mastercard, Visa and American Express cards.

Paying for public transport You can buy a bus ticket from a "cartoleria," which is a shop where magazines and newspapers are sold. Most train and bus stations in Italy have cartoleria shops. You can also buy bus tickets in some "tabaccheria" shops.

City transport In case of a ticket control, passengers must be able to show a validated ticket (both on board and at the stop). One-way tickets cost €1,20 and may be purchased at ATAF client points, authorized dealers (newspaper stands, tabacchi, cafés), equipped ticket machines and on board (for € 2).

Look for the contactless symbol on your credit or debit card to see if your card is contactless enabled. Then, board a bus with the contactless symbol and instead of paying with cash, simply tap your card or contactless-enabled device onto the reader and wait for the beep.
